If you can sing, you belong in this summer’s Sonoma County Fair Singing Sensation contest. You won’t win a big recording contract or appear on national television, but you might be taking home a $1,000 prize. And don’t worry -- our judges aren’t going to tell the world that you can’t sing -- no one will be embarrassed here! Deadline: July 15.
There is a limit of 20 acts. Entries will be screened and a final roster of 20 contestants will be chosen by July 20. Your application must be at the fairgrounds no later than July 15.

  • YOU CAN ALSO SIGN UP EARLY TO BE A PART OF THE DAILY PARADE AND WIN SPECIAL PRIZES!

Who Can Enter? Anyone Can Enter
What Are The Prizes? Surprise Prizes will be given to exceptional entries!
The Sonoma County Fair is filled with old fashioned fun, including a daily parade. You are invited to come and join the parade any day during the Fair, starting at 5 p.m. You can just show up on parade day and participate, but we encourage you to register. Marching bands and dance/drill/baton groups should register by July 20, 2009, and will receive separate instructions. See full details below under Fairtime Contest Information.

  • THERE ARE SO MANY WAYS TO BE PART OF THE SHOW!
Fair contests are fun for all ages
  • In addition to classic Fair contests like Bubblegum Bubble Blowing and Scarecrow Building, this year’s Fair will feature contests related to our prehistoric theme, including Dinosaur Quiz-O-Rama, Dinosaur Egg Hunt, and Dinosaur ROAR.
    Who Can Enter?
Some contests are limited by age, but others are open to all. The Free Throw, LEGO Building and Jump Rope contests have divisions for all ages. Milk Moustache, the Dinosaur Egg Hunt and the Diaper Derby are just for kids. Some contests are team events, and your whole family can enter together.
    How To Enter Contests!
To enter “on-the-spot” contests, you don’t need to sign up ahead of time. Just check the time and location and show up about ten minutes before the contest start time. Participants in “on-the-spot” contests are required to fill out registration cards. Four contestants are chosen at random at the end of the Fair to receive a season pass to next year’s Fair. Winners from last year’s contestants are Isabella Beal (Santa Rosa), Ciera Gilman(Windsor), Amanda Lyman (Petaluma) and Abby Simion (Guerneville).
Most “on-the-spot” contests are judged by the audience, and prizes are awarded immediately. In many cases, the prizes are certificates good for Fair food or merchandise. Many of the Fair’s vendors donate prizes, like a corn dog or a box of fudge. Every contestant gets a ribbon. You don’t have to bring anything for these contests — the Fair provides everything you need.

Contestants will be divided into categories at the start of the contest. The size and type of categories will depend upon the number of entries and the number of different types of imitations. In the Dinosaur Look-Alike contest, we are looking for people who look like dinosaurs. This doesn’t mean you put on a dinosaur costume. It means that you (or your dad) look enough like an Gallimimus to make the audience say ‘oh, I can see the resemblance!’ Or maybe you and a friend have discovered that when you stand together in a certain way you look like a Diplodocus. Be creative! Contestants do not have to enter both contests. Sign up at the stage on the day of the contest, no later than 10 minutes before the start.

Sign up at the Kids Area on the day of the contest, no later than 10 minutes before the start.

[Sample questions: What was the largest dinosaur? Name Me - I had large bony plates that stood up along my spine.] Young children will probably do really well on this, but everyone is welcome. Scrap Sculpture Trashosaurus
Who Can Enter? Open to all fairgoers
    When? August 2 at 4:15 p.m.
    Where? Dinosaur Island
Paleontologists tell us that dinosaurs were made from skin & bone, just like other living things. But this is not a Jurassic Park kind of contest. Rather than heading into the lab, you just need to dig deep in the recycling bin. Using only clean recyclable items, create your own three-dimensional model of a dinosaur. (No fair using new materials!) Look around the house for recyclable items you can use for your dinosaur. Remember – if you use newspaper and other paper from your recycle bin, paper maché is okay.
Bring your dinosaur to the Fair on August 2 by 4 p.m. and we’ll let you in free. Your team must be able to pick up & carry your dinosaur, so don’t make it too big. Prizes will be awarded in adult and children’s categories. Group and family entries are okay, but you may only enter one Trashosaurus.
We will let one person in free with each Trashosaurus--bring it to the Brookwood Gate Entrance. If you arrive at the Fair early, you can leave your entry at Dinosaur Island for safe-keeping. All contestants must be at Dinosaur Island, with their entries, at 4:15 p.m. on August 2. All Scrap Sculpture Trashosaurs will be a part of the Fair parade at 5 p.m.

Scrap Sculpture Trashosaurus - On The Spot!

Where? West side of Finley Hall (outside)
If you don’t have time to create a Trashosaurus at home, you can try creating one at the Fair. (See Scrap Sculpture Trashosaurus for a full description.)
Recycleable materials and tools will be provided, but feel free to bring extra material from your recycling bin. This contest is open to all ages – adults as well as kids are encouraged to enter. Contestants may spend as much time as they want on their entry, but all work must be finished by 4 p.m. After completion, entries will go on display until the judging begins. All contestants must return to the contest area by 4:15 for the judging. All Scrap Sculpture Trashosaurs will be a part of the daily parade at 5 p.m.
To take part in this contest, go to the walkway west of Finley Hall between noon and 4 p.m. on August 2.
